Savor the season’s bounty with these favorites

Heirloom Tomato Pie - From the kitchen of Nathan Thurston, check out the recipe below.

Summer in the Lowcountry means more than seeking cool breezes at the beach or on a shady porch; it’s also about savoring the plethora of local fruits, veggies, and seafood that arrive with the sultry season. Think plump, juicy tomatoes; prickly green okra; sweet corn; and local seafood in all manner of preparations—from tomato pies and succotash to crab salad and boiled shrimp—and don’t forget the icy-cold, home-brewed sweet tea.

This year, we aren’t letting the coronavirus put the kibosh on enjoying the bounty. Visit your nearby farmers’ market (as of press time, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, and Summerville had reopened on a limited basis) or finally sign up for that CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) share you’ve been thinking about and start cooking.
