Learn how to relax this summer with Woodhouse Day Spa's Kim Powell
June 2020

And get her beauty must-haves and accessory tips

Earlier this year, the entrepreneur opened her second Woodhouse spa downtown at Westedge, and she’s recently launched her Hèron candle line. But the mother of three grown boys also relishes her downtime, whether she’s reading a book, admiring a Lowcountry sunset, or indulging in spa treatments. Here, she talks about her skin care routine, how she decides when to splurge, and her summer essentials.

Q Tell us about your skin care routine.
A
I just turned 50 and have been getting bags under my eyes (sigh). I cannot live without my Adonia Peptide 10 Organic Face Serum and Jane Iredale Circle/Delete Concealer! I always have a jar of Maya Chia The Super Blend on hand–quite possibly one of the best products and local. Fun fact, we have the only Maya Chia facial in the world.

Q Do you have any signature accessories?
A
My girlfriends make fun of me because I throw on my white Gucci flower pin quite often (10x style points!). We sell E. Newton jewelry at the spa, and I love the simple gold hoop earrings and cuff bracelet and wear them a lot!

Q Which local retailers do you shop frequently?
A
I try to shop local almost exclusively. I live downtown, so Maris Dehart (pictured at right), Julep, and Hampden are my go-to favorites for clothes, and I love Noddy and Vieuxtemps for gifts.

“It shouldn‘t cost a lot of money to have personal style, and my belief is that if you’re going to splurge, make sure it‘s special and can be worn often.”

Q Share some of your favorite summer beach essentials.
A
I love sun hats but cannot seem to pull them off, so admittedly, I am a ball cap girl. I love my Shep Gear Green USA Flag Cap. I am also obsessed with Tara Grinna and cannot live without her wraps. I wear them over my shoulders or around my waist.

Q Can you offer your best tips for how to keep wellness a priority during the coronavirus pandemic?
A
Exercise outside, and read something inspiring every day. I’ve recently loved reading The Wisdom of Sundays by Oprah Winfrey and Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens.

Q What do you look for when you‘re shopping for yourself?
A
If I‘m spending more money, I ask myself if the item has enough style points to pass the 10x rule: Is there something special about it that makes it stand out from a less expensive version, and can I wear it more than 10 times? I also look for statement pieces that can change an outfit without a lot of fuss.

Q What’s your favorite nail color for the summer?
A
My faves are CND Shellac ”Pink Bikini” and ”Femme Fatale” for pedicures. I do not paint my fingernails, but I do get a buff and polish and love the simplicity of it.
