Nothing in the world may be funkier than a New Orleans dumpster, particularly one chock-full of crawfish étouffée and muffulettas, covered in a sweet musical roux of funk, soul, R&B, blues, and jazz decades in the making. For living proof, look no further than Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, a 21st-century musical gumbo of everything we love about The Crescent City.
Featuring bassist Nick Daniels (Neville Brothers, Wild Magnolia Mardi Gras Indians, Boz Scaggs, and Etta James), drummer Raymond Weber (Trey Anastasio, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Harry Connick Jr.), guitarist Ian Neville (Neville Brothers, Funky Meters), bassist Tony Hall (Dave Matthews and Friends), and, of course, keyboardist Ivan Neville (Neville Brothers, New Orleans Social Club), the group’s funk pedigree is unrivaled, speaking volumes to the brotherhood of longtime Louisiana-based musicians.
Their classic ’70s-era inner-city sound is fleshed out with raw, aggressive guitar; tightly swinging percussion; two colossal bassists; and continuously pulsating church organ. Ivan and company are currently in the studio mixing tracks for a new record, so who knows what kind of tasty funk they will serve up on the road this fall? Rest assured, you won’t leave hungry. —Stanfield Gray
