A local company is elevating cornhole to an all-new level

As an undergrad at Auburn, Nathan Guthrie “found charming tailgates with silver candelabras, chandeliers, and full-service catering,” he recalls, “but not one set of quality cornhole boards.” Researching post-graduation, he determined the scarcity wasn’t due to lack of demand, just supply.

In 2015, the 31-year-old launched his own local company, Matthias Kaupermann—named for the 14th-century Bavarian cabinetmaker who, legend has it, invented the cornhole board—to create the games he envisioned. Starting at $3,995, the regulation-size “Signature Classic” is handcrafted from West African mahogany, with maple inlays that can be customized (recently, they monogrammed one for a Palm Beach wedding). The hardware is marine-grade brass, the shoulder strap features Horween leather, and the bean bags are all-weather Sunbrella acrylic canvas. For $695, you can snag the ”Compact” version.
