The latest news in fashion and shopping around Charleston
Baby Bliss
Moms and dads, save the date: on November 4, Under the Almond Trees opens downtown, revealing modern baby gear ranging from Bugaboo strollers to Babymoov cameras to fanciful mobiles. “I aim to create not only a shopping destination, but a community for new parents—a place where they can meet other families, take a class or attend a baby shower, or maybe just relax with baby in our Mothers Room,” says owner Hillary Lamendola. Courses in practical skills, such as infant CPR and proper car-seat installation, will begin in the new year. 171 King St., underthealmondtrees.com
Great for Gifting
Need a surcee in a hurry? Or something to dress the nest before family comes to town? Pay a visit to Fourteen & East, which opened near Avondale in September. “We focus on goods made by women,” says owner Jenna Marie Moore, “and offer Lowcountry products such as Rewined Candles and hand-painted oyster-shell dishes by Grit & Grace, as well as favorite brands like Rifle Paper Co. and Mud Pie.” Start your shopping during the holiday open house and grand opening party on Thursday, November 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. 936 Savannah Hwy., facebook.com/FourteenAndEast
Suds Up!
Handmade soap maven April Motley, owner of Charleston’s Old Whaling Co., is settling into a West Ashley retail space this month. “We’re keeping our booth in the City Market as well—that’s where we got our start in 2014,” she notes, but the new shop allows them to expand their offerings for bath, body, and home. In addition to face masks and a new line of candles, check out the store’s DIY scrub bar, where customers can personalize their products by choosing their salt, then their scent. 1640 Ashley Hall Rd., oldwhalingcompany.com
A Star is Born
At an antiques show, Mariana “Mini” Hay fell hard and fast for a gold wedding ring featuring an antique star setting (“the diamonds are set flush into the band, with a star engraved around each stone,” she explains). It was just the inspiration she needed for her palmetto bug-inspired Goldbug Collection, and this fall, the Shining Star Collection debuted with eight jewelry designs, plus an ornament, made of gold-plated pewter set with Swarovski crystals (see two of the pieces in “2017 Holiday Gift Guide” on pages 101 and 102).
