Cooper River Bridge Run leads in eco-aware race innovations

“Save the trees!” isn’t a cheer you’d expect to hear on the sidelines of most races—but the Cooper River Bridge Run (CRBR) isn’t a typical 10K. And with plans to go paperless, the 34th annual event is ensuring every runner follows a green path from the start.

This year, participants can register online or by using a kiosk at the CRBR’s Mount Pleasant store. And instead of a race packet, they receive a “race-let” wristband that holds a USB. Connect it to a computer to access important race-related information, then peruse the online magazine and virtual goodie bag containing downloadable sponsor coupons.

Race organizers also plan to continue eco-friendly efforts from last year, when they recycled 6,000 pounds of cardboard, 7,100 pounds of trash, and 12,000 pounds of plastic bottles. Going one step further this spring, they’ve enlisted a local composting company to collect and separate food scraps discarded from the bananas and bagels offered.

On April 2, racers can cross the finish knowing their running shoes have left hardly a carbon footprint.
