Art Without Walls
October 2014
The Gibbes is ”on the go”

After more than 100 years at 135 Meeting Street, the Gibbes Museum of Art closed its doors to the public at the end of August. In the spring of 2016, they’ll reopen to reveal the results of a grand, $13.5-million renovation. Patrons can look forward to seeing a retail shop, café, and studio and classroom spaces on the ground floor; newly expanded second- and third-floor galleries; and the rotunda’s restored Tiffany-style stained-glass dome.

And in the meantime? Welcome to a museum without walls. While the museum is closed, Gibbes’ classes, fundraisers, Distinguished Lecture Series (November 19), Art with a Twist discussions, and more will be held at locations around town (from Memminger Auditorium to the Charleston Library Society). ”We’ve also introduced the Insider Art Series—one-night exhibitions that will give members the opportunity to talk with artists and curators about works of art,” says executive director Angela Mack. Find the calendar of happenings at www.gibbesmuseum.org.
