Beyond Neutral: Airy, relaxed, and “get me out of my box” was owner Rebecca Ufkes’s directive to interior designer Angie Hranowsky, who obliged by wallpapering the ceilings in Nobilis “Faux Bois” in a subtle teal green, reorienting the living space toward the water view, and sprinkling in jazzy patterns and hues of purple, orangey reds, and blue.
All eyes here are on the water, except for the occasional Netflix watcher. The Ufkeses resolved their difference of opinion on whether to have a TV in the living room by tucking a retractable screen in the custom cabinet by the fireplace, designed thanks to Phil’s engineering finesse.
Hranowsky knew this whimsical mirror, found at the New York Design Center, commanded a central spot. She balanced its playfulness with a bentwood Thonet chair beside the console, covered in the lush “Monstera” fabric by Hunt Slonem for Kravet, adding further swirl and fun in the entry hall.
The light-filled sitting area with a blue linen sofa from Jayson Home in Chicago is Rebecca’s favorite morning perch.
“A round table was definitely called for here,” says Hranowsky, who was seeking to balance the kitchen’s linear shapes. Her carpenter custom created the walnut dining table, outfitted with a marble lazy Susan that was Phil’s engineering. A vintage Danish teak and white glass chandelier from 1stDibs adds casual spunk to the dining room without obstructing views into the kitchen or out to the waterway.
A full kitchen redo was not initially in the cards, but Hranowsky was thrilled when she got the all clear to create a sleeker, more functional space, featuring Ann Sacks glazed geometric tiles and a Mary Edna Fraser batik showcased from the pantry.
Phil’s home office features a custom desk crafted by Josh Brooks of J. Brooks Inc. and a vintage leather wing chair discovered at 17 South Antiques.
Local artisan Suzanne Allen covered the den walls in a hand-troweled turquoise plaster for a luminous finish. The vintage Moroccan Beni Ourain rug from Imports from Marrakesh and mod cube-scoop chairs from 1stDibs add fun pattern, shape, and texture.
As the downstairs primary bedroom was converted to a den and home gym, this second-floor suite received full posh treatment, including Allen’s gold hand-stenciling on a grasscloth wall covering, a first for Hranowsky. The diamond pattern is echoed in the headboard and bed skirt fabricated in a jacquard silk by Jennifer Shorto and bench found at 1stDibs and recovered in Carolina Irving Textiles “Zig Zag” fabric in “coral.”
A faux bamboo wardrobe from Fritz Porter, custom drapes in a Muriel Brandolini fabric from Holland & Sherry, and vintage chaise in Pierre Frey velvet add a touch of Hollywood flair and elegant romance.
The powder room dazzles in radiant gold-flecked Cole & Son wallpaper, accented by a mirror found at John Pope Antiques and delicate sconces from Circa Lighting.
Charleston Table Company crafted the oversized ipe picnic table complete with an immense concrete top that took nine men to heave into place.
The pillows and cushions for the relaxed outdoor seating areas repeat the deep plum and soft blues from the living room.
