A central hall bisects the original farmhouse, which is flanked by symmetrical additions from two previous owners. A collection of pottery shards and glass (below) that Shannon and her brother unearthed on the property as children is displayed in the foyer.
The breathtaking harbor view from Shannon’s airy studio window provides the Lowcountry native with ever-evolving inspiration for her abstract landscape paintings, which are available through the Charleston Artist Collective.
The home effortlessly blends original art, like the Slava Roubonov painting, Gathering, hanging above the sofa, with original architectural details such as the heart-pine floors, dentil mouldings, fireplace surround, and cypress wainscoting.
With the help of interior designer Amee Leland, the homeowners replaced numerous heavy and dated crystal chandeliers with sculptural modern selections more suited to the couple’s casually sophisticated aesthetic.
Shannon fell for this antique sideboard because its lion-head pulls mimicked the figurehead that has been mounted above the home’s entryway since she was a child living next door. The painting is by fellow Charleston Artist Collective member Ann Keane.
“Madelyn and Avery love to make up songs on the piano. They will put on little shows and ask us to sit on the sofa in here to watch,” says Shannon of the music room, which is used primarily for the girls’ weekly voice and piano lessons.
Just as Shannon and her siblings ran between their yard and Julia McIver’s growing up, the Wood kids (inset photo) can flit from their backyard to their grandparents’ pool next door.
As the couple set out to create a backyard haven ideal for outdoor fun, David’s design skills came into play. His vision incorporated a putting green, an in-ground trampoline, an elevated fire pit, and stone pavers that cut a cool path through the sloping lawn.
The family spends weekends entertaining friends and relatives with casual outdoor parties that belie the property’s formal front façade. A variety of relaxed gathering spaces, including a deep double piazza and brick patio, accommodate guests.
