WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN: After 30 years of family life, the Rama residence, situated on the back side of Isle of Palms, was in need of an update.
The couple turned to interior designer J.P. Horton to bring a contemporary yet traditional touch to the three story, five-bedroom, waterfront residence.

COASTAL HUES: A palette of blues and greens, inspired by the marsh and Intracoastal Waterway views, was infused into this now light and bright living room through custom pillows in a variety of fabrics and trims. The pattern play pulls from and contrasts with the Charlotte Moss “Caroline” drapes that dominate the room, changing in scale and function as it moves from the drapes to the sofas...

Family mementoes, from treasured photos to an expansive collection of sweetgrass baskets, take pride of place in the built-in shelving, which Horton augmented with aged brass reproduction shutter knobs from the Nathaniel Russel House, sourced at Charleston Hardware Co.
STEPPING IT UP: From traditional to terrific, the entryway and staircase is enlivened by a bold blue leopard-print stair runner by Nourison, installed for design but also to help the Ramas’ elderly Labrador, Grady, and two rambunctious grandchildren navigate the steps safely. A gilded semi-flush light fixture from Visual Comfort, sheds light on the scene.
MIRROR MIRROR: A pair of matching console tables, skirted in fabric designed by Horton, display antique ginger jars from Well Furnished in the entry hall, where an aged brass mirror from Ballard Designs reflects the light from the marsh front windows to brighten the otherwise dark space.
SEA CHANGE: Swapping out a sisal rug for a gorgeous wool Oushak in a tone-on-tone pattern and painting the walls and the back of the built-ins with Benjamin Moore “Wythe Blue” refreshed this formal dining room. A few touches of fabric, from recovering the chairs in chintz to adding the white chandelier from Wildwood with linen shades from Ballard Designs, and the transformation was complete.

ISLAND LIVING: Painting the base of the petite island in Benjamin Moore “Knoxville Gray” and replacing the light fixture with a Visual Comfort gilded iron pagoda lantern updated the existing kitchen, aligning it with the rest of the home’s redesign.
IN FULL VIEW: Horton drew much of his inspiration for the home’s new palette from its spectacular views and the ever-changing colors of the Intracoastal Waterway and marsh.
Peggy’s favorite are the muted greens and blues of the early evening, when she loves to take in spectacular sunsets from their deck overlooking a swimming pool and deep-water dock.
