Personal Space: This century-old Sullivan’s Island beach cottage, which was recently refreshed and reconfigured for another hundred years of family fun, offers up private nooks and charm aplenty.
Saving Grace: “We love this house, as it’s so authentically Sullivan’s,” say the homeowners who fell for this Pettigrew Street gem.
Its quintessential beachside charm—complete with an enormous porch perfect for entertaining—made it the ideal candidate to renovate rather than raze.
Woven Whimsy: A custom-designed cluster of wicker pendant lights from Serena and Lily dominates the reimagined entryway/dining room. A vintage cabinet from Indigo Market provides storage space as well as a showcase for two striking lamps from Chairish and mirror from Candelabra.
Serene Scene: Local artist Shannon Wood’s expansive beach scene positively pops from the bold blue walls, a cheery welcome to the home. Beneath it, a Williams-Sonoma Home wicker chair invites visitors to sit and stay awhile.
Big Imagination: For the living area, Isbell created three spaces in the former dining room. Serena and Lily wicker pendants and a slip-covered sofa delineate the main seating area, capped by a vintage hooded wicker chair from Chairish. A banquette from Ballard and bistro chairs from Serena and Lily comprise the breakfast nook.
Unique finds, such as the vintage wicker elephant bar and the 1940s driftwood inspired table lamps, dot the home.
“I shop as much vintage as possible, because it adds so much character and individuality to a house,” says the designer.
Gather ’Round: Working around the original glass-fronted cabinets in the kitchen, Isbell added a butcher-block island to allow for flexible seating in the space. On the floor, a chessboard pattern painted by Suzanne Allen Studio continues the theme of painted wood flooring seen throughout the home.
Color Play: A vintage red wicker pendant light in the breakfast nook is one of the homeowner’s favorite finds. A painting by Isle of Palms-based artist Cindy DeAntonio presides over the scene.
In the family room, colorful pillows from Indigo Market complement the abstract landscape from Wendover Art Group.
Comfortable Quarters: A large Dash and Albert rug softens the master bedroom, which has its own access to the porch. Two vintage rattan stools provide the perfect spot to drop the towels post-beach day, and a pair of Bungalow 5 bedside tables are the ideal place to stash summer reading.
A headboard and rug from Serena and Lily lend a touch of girlish charm to the daughter’s bedroom.
The lucky elephant theme continues on a pillow in the guest room...

Designed for the Elements: The large porch runs the length of the home, providing a dining space for 10 as well as an outdoor living area, furnished with seating from Lane Venture and pillows from Candelabra.
Sitting Pretty: No Southern porch is complete without a swing. A custom cushion matches the hue of the home’s original shutters, which have kept this beachside abode safe from Mother Nature for more than a century
