A rare double lot allowed the Hardees to build an addition for a primary bedroom suite and pool house. They also put in a pool and expanded the patio to maximize party space. The towering crepe myrtles and holly bushes are the only remnants of the previous owner’s yard.
The lines of the addition echo the gabled dormers of the original 1995 home, which won a Carolopolis Award for new construction.
The foyer is painted in Sherwin Williams “Historic Charleston Port Royal.” The couple found the vintage wheat sheaf table at a flea market in Paris.

The Hardees reimagined the overgrown side yard as an entertaining space with formal garden beds, a large brick patio, and a pool designed to look like a reflecting pond.

Abstract art, and bold paint colors, like Farrow & Ball “Hague Blue” in the living room, are juxtaposed with antique furnishings.“Brown furniture is very stuffy in general so you have to balance it,” says John.
A Jonathan Adler chandelier and Thibaut “Clear Clouds” wallpaper on the ceiling lend a modern touch to a formal living room appointed with family antiques. The chairs, from John’s grandparents, are covered in a striped pattern from Thibaut.
The couple chose Sumatra white quartzite from AGM Imports for the kitchen counters, island, and backsplash—all fabricated by Martol Marble & Granite.

Cabinets galore and a butler’s pantry allow for uncluttered counter space. “No matter how big your house is, there’s never enough storage,” John says.
The Hardees swapped the kitchen and dining rooms. Now, with floor-to-ceiling French doors, the new space is flooded with light, showing off the Paul Montgomery mural wallpaper. The chairs were re-covered in Schumacher velvet for a pop of green and blue.
The Hardees asked the architect of the addition, Sebastian von Marschall, to make the primary bedroom smaller so they could have a larger closet.
Said closet resembles a high-end men’s store and stows everything from Will’s sunglass collection to luggage. “I’m very big into ‘everything in its place,’” John says.

In the guest room, Thibaut “Yukio” wallpaper in green steals the show.
Carved out of a storage attic, the top floor bedroom is furnished with twin beds passed down from Will’s parents, with Scalamandre fabric on the benches—an ideal spot for a kids’ sleepover.
Thibaut wallpaper in animal prints (in the adjacent bath, right) keeps the mood fun.
