A split-level ranch on the Isle of Palms gets a refresh, inside and out, returning its midcentury modern vibe.
Claire stands in the home’s custom steel front door with Charleston-based artist Nathan McClements’ cowboy art behind her.
Modern Love: Ed and Claire O’Bryan purchased this 1960s ranch house following a full renovation by architect Scott Brekke, builder Wes Mahaffey, and interior designer Corin Havens. The team took the home down to the studs giving it a modern makeover while maintaining a connection to its midcentury roots.
COLOR HER HAPPY: The warm white kitchen, designed by Corin Havens, features shiplap walls, paneled white oak cabinets, marble countertops, and a custom plaster hood by Niki Miller of Charleston Fine Finishes. The space contrasts beautifully with the dark walls of the foyer, where herringbone floors and an artful grouping of rattan light fixtures add a natural element.
Between the rooms, a small bar area is accessed through an arched entry. Here, interior designer Becca Jones added a fun pop of color to the cabinets with Sherwin Williams “Forward Fuchsia.”
Color-block party: In the open living and dining area, Jones embraced Claire’s love of color with bright yellow velvet dining chairs. “We searched high and low for the perfect yellow velvet that could withstand young kids, the beach, and lots of entertaining,” says Jones. In the living room, Coley Home chairs covered in a Kelly Wearstler color-block fabric reinforce the vintage feel, accented by the curved brown sofa; floor lamps from Celadon; and Montauk Surf Club, a Barbie-focused digital artwork by David Parise.
Pattern Play: It was a new fabric and wallpaper line by artist Teil Duncan Henley that inspired the home’s colorful makeover. Her designs are integrated throughout the daughters’ rooms, including “Plaid, Coral” adorning the antique beds and windows. (Above) The bright “Swoosh, Mandarin” pops against the angular millwork. In the other en suite bath, the playful “Beach” wallpaper adds a coastal vibe.
It’s paired with “Rhino, Fuchsia” drapes, a pattern repeated in the adjoining bathroom.
The primary bedroom suite features a white oak bed with brass inlay and brass pendant lights that pick up on the flecks of gold in the deep blue shades.
This color is repeated in the spacious bathroom with its luxe soaker tub.
The cozy office space just fits a modern desk and comfy chair upholstered in Henley’s “Hashblocks, Neutral,” which is repeated in the Roman shades.
Party in the Back: The backyard, complete with a fire-pit seating area (left), shiplap-covered cabana, and infinity pool wrapped by a Brazilian hardwood deck, provides a perfect play space for kids and adults alike.
The home received a vibrant makeover for modern living while retaining its midcentury roots
