Style Q&A: Designer Nicholas Overstreet shares his Boysterous style

Style Q&A: Designer Nicholas Overstreet shares his Boysterous style
February 2024

Find out the accessory designer’s date night style and what he couldn't live without

In 2016, the aspiring dessigner had an idea to fashion bow ties from oyster shells after hosting a Friendsgiving oyster roast, and his business Boysterous was born. Two years later, he showed his creations at Charleston Fashion Week, where the accessories were a hit. Overstreet partnered with his two brothers and expanded the line to include sustainably sourced exotic leather bags, wallets, belts, and watch bands. In 2022, Boysterous opened a boutique on Broad Street, sharing space with local designer Gina Roberts’s Brooke Wilder line. Here, Overstreet shares his philosophy about style and what he wears for a date night.

Q Tell us about your favorite local designers.
A
Brooke Wilder will, of course, always be one of my favorite local brands, but there are a couple other designers that I’m impressed with. There’s an up-and-coming designer named Devin Smalls. He’s got great vision, and I’m sure he’s going to blow up soon. He’s been putting on a fashion show the last couple of years called The Gullah Gala, and it’s gaining a ton of momentum. I’m also very impressed by Morgan Kimberly. She’s a bridal and formal dress designer, who I’m also sure will be a household name one day.

Q What items are in your real or virtual shopping cart that you hope to buy soon?
A
It’s time for a new hat and maybe a leather jacket, such as this Billy Reid “Chore” coat. I’m also in the market for a new, unique necklace.

Q Describe your signature look.
A
In the cooler months, I like to wear a variety of jackets and layers. I love a good turtleneck sweater, such as this cashmere honeycomb style from Billy Reid (right), and I accessorize it with some form of neckwear, a big hat, and a Boysterous belt.

Q What would you wear on a date night and where are you going?
A
I’m getting fancy for date night. I’ll probably layer up with a nice tweed jacket, a black cashmere turtleneck, one of my necklaces, and a wool “Aw Shoot” fedora from Goorin Bros. I’ll likely be stomping around in Tecovas “The Wyatt” ostrich boots, too. Oh, and we’re absolutely going to 167 Raw for dinner before we catch a show at either Dock Street Theatre or PURE Theatre.

Q Which items in your closet couldn’t you live without?
A
My Sabah shoes, my insanely comfortable Faherty linens, my thrifted jackets, and of course, my daily carry—the Boysterous duffle bag.
