Barony Tavern
This new fine-dining spot within the Renaissance Charleston Historic District Hotel vibes like a whimsy-laced lodge—note the tuxedo- and monocle-clad taxidermy fox and Kevin LePrince’s portrait of a deer enjoying a glass of wine. From the kitchen, Bob Carter turns out Southern-infused American fare, such as crispy veal sweetbreads, tender three-inch-thick pork chops, and coconut cake. On the bar menu, the Barony Burger is a sure bet, offering bacon, aged cheddar, and green-goddess aioli piled atop juicy, well-seasoned beef. Both menus offer a selection of salads and a daily veggie special for those seeking lighter fare. Some of the offerings will invite comparisons to Carter’s previous outings, but there are enough innovations here for the tavern to stand out on its own. (843) 297-4246

Cumberland Street Smokehouse
It may be nestled in the touristy end of town, but the simple fare served up here is worth sampling by visitors and locals alike. Start with a basket of the cake-like cornbread or the duck-fat fries that chef Kyle Yarbrough brought from his former place of employment, the shuttered La Fourchette. Pulled pork or chicken barbecue sandwiches and plates (sauce to your liking from bottles on the table) come with yummy sides like mac ’n’ cheese and baked beans. And don't let the infusion of Krispy Kreme doughnuts stop you from indulging in the banana pudding—it’s rich, but utterly delicious. Find Cumberland Street Smokehouse on Facebook
